The star incorporates the initials NRI, representing the National Radio Institute, a well-known correspondence school founded in Washington, D.C., in 1914 that trained thousands of students in radio, electronics, and later television servicing.  The National Radio Institute became one of America's largest home-study technical schools during the mid-20th century.
